WHAT I LEARNED

Through my interview with Bailey, I gained so much valuable insight into the creative side of the sports industry. As someone who aspires to work in the creative field, though I initially didn’t consider graphic design specifically, hearing her journey and the level of creative freedom she has on certain projects was incredibly inspiring. She spoke about using her designs to tell meaningful stories, and it made me realize just how powerful creativity can be in shaping the way people engage with sports. Her experiences have encouraged me to explore even more opportunities within the creative space to broaden my horizons and refine my skills.

As a woman hoping to break into the sports industry, Bailey’s story resonated with me on an even deeper level. Listening to her talk about her path to working with the Cleveland Cavaliers, how she continually pushed herself, and how she earned her role through sheer grit and perseverance was truly motivating. She emphasized the importance of knowing her worth and standing firm in it—never allowing others to take advantage of her or diminish her contributions. That kind of confidence and self-respect is something I admire and hope to carry with me as I progress in my own career.

One of the most compelling parts of her journey was the decision she made early on to take an internship with the MLB instead of accepting the full-time job offers she had right after college. That choice, driven by passion rather than immediate security, ultimately led her to the right opportunities. She continued to be patient and selective with her career moves, waiting for the right team and organization that aligned with her values. Hearing her reflect on those decisions made me realize how important it is to trust the process and prioritize long-term fulfillment over short-term comfort.

Another aspect of Bailey’s approach that stood out to me was how she maintains a strong work-life balance, particularly with her commitment to a structured 9-to-5 schedule when possible. She acknowledged that the sports industry often requires long and unpredictable hours, but on the days when she can control her schedule, she makes it a point to protect that time for herself. That level of discipline and boundary-setting is something I deeply respect, and it reminded me that self-worth isn’t just about how much effort you put into your career but also about how you take care of yourself outside of work.

Her advice about working in sports was also incredibly insightful. She emphasized that sometimes starting at a lower level and working your way up is the best path, if you’re passionate about what you do, people will recognize it, and opportunities will come. Beyond just her graphic design skills, she highlighted the importance of fighting for her team, advocating for her work, and developing strong interpersonal skills. These qualities have played a major role in her growth as a professional and as a person.

Although I am a broadcast journalism major, seeing how Bailey’s work is not only spread throughout Cleveland but also showcased on a national level during the playoffs made me reflect on my own career aspirations. It’s fascinating to think about how many different creative roles exist within the sports industry, and it has made me reconsider my own path once again. While I’m not sure exactly where I’ll end up, I know that this conversation has broadened my perspective and given me a lot to think about as I move forward.
